Furry Friends Pet Adoption

No need to RSVP, just stop in. The Furry Friends animal rescue will be at the library with lots of animals available for adoption. Stop by the library’s meeting room to meet and adopt your new best friend. Furry Friends will also be accepting pet food donations at this event.

Michigan Roots: Genealogy Research in the Wolverine State

Drawn by high-paying manufacturing jobs and inexpensive land, thousands of people from all over Europe and the United States, including the Deep South, New England, New York, and Pennsylvania, migrated to Michigan during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This session, aimed at researchers whose ancestral trails extend to and from Michigan, will explore these migration patterns and provide an overview of the rich and abundant genealogical resources available in print and online.

Henry Ford: His Life and Times

Henry Ford spent most of his life making headlines, good, bad, but never indifferent. July 2013 is the 150th anniversary of the birth of Henry Ford. We invite you to attend a presentation on Ford’s life and work by automotive historian and member of the Henry Ford Heritage Association, Russell Dore. You will learn about Ford’s inventions, his family, some of the ways he changed the world, and both the positive and more controversial aspects of his strong personality. Stop by an hour before the program to check out the classic Fords and other cars that will be on display in our parking lot courtesy of the South Lyon Spark Plugs Car Club. Members on the club will be on hand to answer your questions about these dream machines.

Home Brewing for Beginners

Learn to brew like a master! Jason Smith, owner of Adventures in Homebrewing, will teach you the basics of brewing beer at home. Jason started brewing in 1992 and opened his first store in 1999. In addition to owning two stores, one in Ann Arbor, he is also a Brew Club member, Beer Judge and vintner. Join us for a fun and informative evening.

Ballistics with Bike Pumps (Grades 6 & up)

Use hardware that you find around the house to launch rockets hundreds of feet into the air! All Hands Active will bring a traditional method of combining bike pumps, PVC, and a little muscle to launch 2 liter bottles. Bonus points if you can figure out ways to improve upon the rocket design, or determine how fast and high the rockets go!  FYI:  This program will be outdoors. If the weather gets too ugly, we may have a different ballistics project that's a tad more indoor friendly.

Cagney, a registered therapy dog, will be dropping by the Library every Tuesday to let the kids read to him.  This is a great opportunity to practice your reading skills this summer!  Come to the Youth Department and take a turn.  You can bring your own book or use one of ours.

Come enjoy a black light afternoon with food and drinks that glow! Bring a white t-shirt and we will provide everything you need to make a glowing design!

Wildlife Safari will bring the magic and adventure of animals to the Library for a unique hands on experience.  The presentation will focus on animals that live underground.  Nelson and the Adventure Society will travel across the world on a quest to study the strange lives of rare creatures not easily found.  Presented by Nelson, “The Animal Guy”.

Adult Get Crafty: Garden Stepping Stone

Join Marie King in a Get Crafty program for adults. Everyone will get to create and decorate their own concrete garden stepping stone.

Adult Battle of the Books for Charity

Each team will pay $25 to participate and will indicate their non-library charity of choice. The winning team will have a donation made to the charity of their choice. Teams are a maximum of 5 participants each. Register with a team and we will provide you with the list of books. Please see an Adult librarian for more information.

1,000 Mile Great Lakes Walk

Michigan native Loreen Niewenhuis, has always had a connection to and deep love of Lake Michigan. She decided to make the 1,000 mile trek around the lake and then wrote "A 1,000 Mile Walk on the Beach: One Woman's Trek of the Perimeter of Lake Michigan." Next she decided to touch every Great Lake and her second big trek resulted in "A 1,000 Mile Great Lake Walk.". Loreen will share her fascinating story with us on October 29th at 7:00 PM.
