Furry Friends Pet Adoption

Michigan Roots: Genealogy Research in the Wolverine State

Drawn by high-paying manufacturing jobs and inexpensive land, thousands of people from all over Europe and the United States, including the Deep South, New England, New York, and Pennsylvania, migrated to Michigan during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This session, aimed at researchers whose ancestral trails extend to and from Michigan, will explore these migration patterns and provide an overview of the rich and abundant genealogical resources available in print and online.

Henry Ford: His Life and Times

Henry Ford spent most of his life making headlines, good, bad, but never indifferent. July 2013 is the 150th anniversary of the birth of Henry Ford. We invite you to attend a presentation on Ford’s life and work by automotive historian and member of the Henry Ford Heritage Association, Russell Dore. You will learn about Ford’s inventions, his family, some of the ways he changed the world, and both the positive and more controversial aspects of his strong personality. Stop by an hour before the program to check out the classic Fords and other cars that will be on display in our parking lot courtesy of the South Lyon Spark Plugs Car Club. Members on the club will be on hand to answer your questions about these dream machines.

Ballistics with Bike Pumps (Grades 6 & up)

Use hardware that you find around the house to launch rockets hundreds of feet into the air! All Hands Active will bring a traditional method of combining bike pumps, PVC, and a little muscle to launch 2 liter bottles. Bonus points if you can figure out ways to improve upon the rocket design, or determine how fast and high the rockets go!  FYI:  This program will be outdoors. If the weather gets too ugly, we may have a different ballistics project that's a tad more indoor friendly.

1,000 Mile Great Lakes Walk

Michigan native Loreen Niewenhuis, has always had a connection to and deep love of Lake Michigan. She decided to make the 1,000 mile trek around the lake and then wrote "A 1,000 Mile Walk on the Beach: One Woman's Trek of the Perimeter of Lake Michigan." Next she decided to touch every Great Lake and her second big trek resulted in "A 1,000 Mile Great Lake Walk.". Loreen will share her fascinating story with us on October 29th at 7:00 PM.
