Library History
History of the Library
From a single room and a few donated books in 1939 to a thriving 22,000 sq. ft. community hub—explore how SSLDL has grown alongside South Lyon and Salem Township.
Community-Led Growth

West Lake Street Library
A massive community fundraising effort in 1962 raised over $8,000 to construct a new building on West Lake Street. Volunteers and donors made it happen.
The new library opened in 1963 with space for 8,000 volumes and remained the home of SSLDL until the move to Pontiac Trail decades later.
Becoming a District Library

From Local to District
In 1993, the library officially transitioned from a city library to a district library serving both the City of South Lyon and Salem Township.
The move set the foundation for expanded services, shared governance, and broader community access. It marked a major turning point in SSLDL’s development.
New Chapter at Pontiac Trail

A Modern Facility
In 1998, SSLDL opened its 15,000 sq. ft. building at 9800 Pontiac Trail, funded by a $2.5 million bond. The new space dramatically increased capacity and provided space for future growth.
This marked the beginning of SSLDL’s modern era of innovation, community engagement, and expanded technology and materials access.
Planning for Expansion

Responding to Growth
In 2005, SSLDL began planning to expand its facilities in response to increasing demand for space, technology, and modern services. The Board conducted surveys, formed committees, and developed strategic goals to accommodate community needs without raising additional taxes.
The planning process led to a proposal to add space for teens, computers, and staff. Architects and consultants helped assess needs, and a plan for phased expansion was developed.
Expansion Completed

A New Chapter
By January 2009, SSLDL completed a major facility expansion including new teen spaces, more public computers, study rooms, a drive-up book drop, and improved garden areas. The $1.6 million project was completed without a tax increase and met nearly all community goals identified in 2005.
The library became more accessible, user-friendly, and modernized with better technology and expanded public services.
Children’s Wing Expansion

Serving Young Readers
A second major expansion was completed in 2019 to enhance the Children’s area, adding 1,900 sq. ft. of space, a new community room, updated restrooms, and improved accessibility features. The Friends of the Library and community donors played a vital role in making this project possible.
Over 1,200 people attended the grand reopening, marking a renewed investment in youth learning and family-friendly space.
Forward Thinking

Investing in Tomorrow
As SSLDL moves into 2025 and beyond, the focus remains on sustainability, digital innovation, and deepening community connection. The Strategic Plan 2023–2026 emphasizes access, inclusivity, and responsive programming.
The library continues to adapt to the changing needs of South Lyon and Salem Township—ensuring that it remains a vital resource for readers, learners, and creators of all ages.
