Social Story: Visiting the Library

This is my library the Salem-South Lyon District Library. The library is free to use and I am always welcome at the library.

When I visit the library I go through the automatic doors. My library has only one floor.

When I enter the library, I walk by the circulation desk on my way to the Youth Department. The circulation desk is where I check out and return books and materials I want to borrow.

When I enter the Youth Department I will see the reference desk where the librarians sit. If I have a question or need help finding something I can ask a librarian.

The Youth Department has rules I need to follow.
  • I need to use my inside voice when I talk so I don’t disturb others.
  • I will be gentle to books, toys, and furniture.
  • I need to walk when I am visiting the library.
Food and drink are not allowed in the Youth Department. No food and drink sign If I need to eat or drink I can use a booth at the front of the library. If the weather is nice I can go outside. My library has a drinking fountain, water bottle filling station and a vending machine that sells snacks.

Sometimes there are many other people in the Youth Department and it can be noisy. If it is too noisy I can borrow a pair of headphones.

This is Norbert. He is a bearded dragon. He lives in a tank at the library. Norbert does not make any sounds. I can look at Norbert but I can not tap on his tank because that could hurt his ears.

My family and I can use our library card to check out materials to take home. I can borrow things from the library for 3 weeks (some new items have shorter borrowing times). When my items are due, I have to return them to the library so other people can borrow them.

I can check out using the self check out machine or with library staff at the circulation desk.
